Generalised Anxiety Pathway

Anxiety can be seen in most classrooms and often feels debilitating for the young person suffering. It can lead to poor attendance and an inability to engage with school, as student’s struggle to deal with symptoms which feel overwhelming. On this pathway, the counsellor will support the young person to explore the root of these anxious feelings so they can understand them and begin to overcome them. The student will learn to recognise triggers for their anxiety, strategies to manage it, as well as support to build their self-esteem and resilience. This improved confidence should lead to improved engagement in all aspects of their school and home life.

6 – 8 sessions delivered weekly.

Referral Criteria

  • Shy, nervous or avoidant behaviour with peers or adults.
  • Distressed, irritable or has panic attacks.
  • Poor memory or decision making skills.
  • Avoids taking risks, is reluctant to try new activities or is self-critical.

What we will work on

  • Explore the root of the anxiety in order to challenge negative thoughts and associations.
  • Develop strategies to recognising triggers of anxiety and manage symptoms.
  • Build self-esteem and resilience in order to cope long-term with anxious situations.

  • Lower anxiety levels as measured on RCAD
  • More able to cope with anxious situations
  • Improved self-esteem and resilience.
  • Improved attendance and engagement with learning
